A Gutenberg Blog Post

13th March 2019 By PhilG

I’ll start with a nice image.

Gutenberg brings more options

The Gutenberg editor gives you many more options than the classic post editor. If you use the Atomic Blocks plugin which is owned by and recommended by WP Engine, you have 41 blocks to choose from. There are also 30+ embed options such as twitter and Facebook.

Use Gutenberg to add eye candy, but don’t over do it.

This is a serous document. Not a dogs dinner

Easy to scan

I just wanted to give you a blog post to scan trough and get an idea of how much more appealing your posts and pages can look with the Gutenberg editor and Atomic blocks plugin.

Styling comes from your theme

The theme I’m using was specifically designed for WordPress 5 and the Gutenberg post editor. If you are using an older theme it probably won’t look any where near as nice as this.

If you add images, make them relevant.

Don’t over do it

I won’t use every available block in this post. That would overwhelm the reader. Instead I’ll format this post the way I would format a typical blog post or text heave page. I will use blocks to brighten up the post and make it more appealing.

I won’t overuse blocks because that would be distracting.

I want to…

  • Draw the reader in
  • Make the post attractive
  • Make the post easier to read
  • Avoid a sea of text

Beacons that aid navigation

Use blocks as land marks to help the reader navigate back to a section that interested them.

Head towards the beacon

When you ask for directions it’s easy to get confused or lost. Especially if you’re given a map detailing ten different streets you need to go down to reach your destination.

But what if they said “it’s on the other side of town, in the base of the beacon. Look you can see it from here”.

Don’t spoil the broth

Too many cooks spoil the broth and too many blocks make your page look unprofessional. Remember that your main aim is to communicate your message effectively. Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) is good advice, I follow it every day.

This is an Atomic Blocks Profile block. You can use it to tell the reader about the author of this post. And add a link to his web page.

At the end of your post

When your reader finishes reading your post don’t let them drift away. There are many ways to guide them to more useful pages on your site or any other site, such as an affiliate sales page.

The Call To Acton Block

You can have a background color or a background image as well as the heading and button. Make it clear what they should do next.
